The Art of Scale: Working Large vs. Small

For me, there’s nothing quite like the energy of working large. When I’m in front of a big canvas, it’s physical—my whole body gets involved. Brushstrokes become gestures, the movement of my arms and shoulders carries into the work, and the painting takes on a life that feels bold and immersive.
Through this reflection, I realize something important: when I look at art, I want to feel it. I want to be moved. I want to stand in front of a piece and feel its power and its impact on me—and that’s what working in large scale gives me as an artist. It’s about creating an experience that takes up space, commands attention, and hits you on a visceral level.

Working small, though, is something entirely different. It’s about intimacy. A small painting feels like a whisper, a secret shared between the artist and the viewer. When I make or view small works, it becomes a private exchange—personal, tender, and quiet in a way that large canvases never are.
Over time, I’ve learned that small paintings give me intimacy and precision, while large paintings give me power and freedom. Both have value, but they speak in entirely different languages. Some works roar across the room, demanding to be felt, while others sit quietly and wait for you to lean in close. Either way, art is personal—it’s about how we like to experience it, no matter the size.

Workshops: What We’ve Done + What’s Next

Our first in-person workshop was such a joy! We dove into abstract art on paper with open minds and curious hands. The conversations, the laughter, the bold brushstrokes—everything came together to help each participant feel less intimidated by abstract art and more open to exploring what’s possible on paper.

Now, we’re keeping that creative momentum going with two more fall workshops:

Exploring Color Field Painting on Paper:
  • Date: October 25, 2025
  • Format: In-person at my Wyomissing, PA studio
  • Registration Cutoff: October 10th
  • Spots Left: 4 in-person spots available
  • Virtual Option: Available for participants everywhere
This session will focus on the magic of color fields—creating expanses of color that express emotion, atmosphere, and mood in ways words often can’t.
Navigating Style in Painting
  • Date: November 22, 2025
  • Format: In-person at my Wyomissing, PA studio + Virtual Option
  • Spots: Limited in-person spots available
This final workshop in the fall series explores how to develop your own voice as a painter—how style emerges, shifts, and strengthens over time.

"Letting art & creativity into one’s life is like opening a door to a beautiful field of flowers—to be delighted by the mere act of creation."
